Teaching a series like Harry Potter gives us so many fun ways to build real reading skills. Beyond just learning new vocabulary, the kids are diving into big concepts like character motivation, tracking complex plots, and talking about deep themes like loyalty and bravery. Having the house flags up in the room brings it all to life—it gives them a hands-on way to connect with the story. This year to help bring the magic even more alive we did a house sorting ceremony and students received their own owl to signify their start as a wizard. Each month we also do house challenges to build community and leadership skills as each team works to earn the house cup.\r\n\r\nOn any given day, our reading block is buzzing with excitement. You'll see groups of students huddled together under their house flags, eagerly debating a plot twist or using sticky notes to mark their favorite lines. During quiet reading time, the whole room goes dead silent as everyone gets completely lost in the wizarding world. The pennants have turned our classroom into such a cozy, inviting space where reading actually feels like an adventure instead of a chore.\r\n\r\nThese books have worked absolute wonders for my reluctant readers. Kids who used to drag their feet when it was time to read are now practically racing to grab the next book in the series so nobody spoils the ending for them.
