Many of our students struggle with sensory overload, overstimulation, anxiety, and emotional regulation. Before this project, we had an empty corner with very little purpose. Because of your generosity, that space has now been transformed into a warm, cozy, calming sensory area where students can safely go when they need a break, a moment alone, or simply a quiet place to reset.\r\n\r\nThe materials provided through this project have made an incredible difference in our school environment. Students are naturally drawn to this calming space and often refer to it as their \"favorite spot\" in the school. More importantly, we have seen a noticeable decrease in overstimulation and emotional meltdowns because students now have a safe and comforting environment designed specifically for their needs.\r\n\r\nThis sensory space has become so much more than just a corner in our building. It has become a place where students feel secure, understood, and supported. It allows them to calm their bodies, regulate their emotions, and return to learning more successfully. For many of our youngest learners, having access to a calming environment teaches them healthy coping skills they can carry with them for years to come.\r\n\r\nThank you for believing in our students and helping create a space that supports not only learning, but emotional well-being, too. Your generosity has helped us build a nurturing environment where every child feels valued, cared for, and safe. The impact of this project will continue to benefit our students every single day, and we are beyond grateful for your support.","fullyFundedDate":1771964556719,"projectUrl":"project/calming-sensory-space-for-all-learners-a/9951372/","projectTitle":"Calming Sensory Space for All Learners at Our School","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Austin","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9178456_orig.png?crop=758,758,x0,y111&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1757332953440","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9178456"},{"teacherId":9178456,"projectId":9951404,"letterContent":"Because of your generosity, our \"Sip, Succeed\" project has made a meaningful and visible impact on both our classroom environment and our entire school community. What may seem like a simple reward, a slushie, has become a powerful tool for motivation, behavior support, and positive school culture.\r\n\r\nEach Friday, we celebrate \"Slush Friday,\" where students who have demonstrated positive behavior throughout the week earn a slushie reward. This incentive has transformed student behavior in a way that is both immediate and lasting. Students are more engaged, more focused, and more intentional about making good choices. They remind one another of expectations, take pride in meeting goals, and are excited to be recognized for their efforts.\r\n\r\nThe shift has been remarkable. We have seen a complete turnaround in behavior, with fewer disruptions, increased cooperation, and a stronger sense of accountability among students. The anticipation of \"Slush Friday\" encourages consistency throughout the entire week, helping even our youngest learners understand the value of positive choices and perseverance.\r\n\r\nBeyond my own classroom, this project has grown into a school-wide celebration. By sharing the slush machine with other teachers, we've created a unified incentive system that promotes positive behavior across multiple classrooms. This has strengthened our school culture, boosted morale, and provided teachers with an engaging way to recognize and reward students.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, this project has helped create a joyful and supportive learning environment where students feel motivated, celebrated, and successful. Your support has not only provided a fun reward, it has helped build habits, confidence, and a love for coming to school each day.\r\n\r\nThank you for investing in our students and helping us create a positive, thriving school community. This cozy environment has encouraged even our most reluctant readers to spend more time with books and build confidence in their reading abilities.\r\n\r\nIn addition to reading, students have been using puppets to bring stories to life. They love acting out characters, retelling stories, and using their imagination during literacy time. This has helped strengthen their comprehension, oral language skills, and creativity.\r\n\r\nThis project is especially meaningful to me and our students, as it was funded in memory of Hank Thompson, a former educator who had a deep love for literacy. Because of this generous gift from his family, his legacy continues to live on through our students as they grow as readers and develop a lifelong love of books.\r\n\r\nThis project has not only increased student engagement but has also helped foster a genuine love for reading. Many donors love books but may not realize just how many skills students practice while reading a powerful text like this one.\r\n\r\nWhile reading this novel, students are learning how to analyze character development, theme, and point of view. They look closely at how the main character, Starr, changes throughout the story and how her experiences shape her voice. Students are also practicing evidence-based discussion, where they support their ideas with quotes from the text. We talk about how authors use dialogue, tone, and symbolism to communicate deeper messages. These skills help students become stronger readers and critical thinkers, which will support them across all subjects.\r\n\r\nReading in my classroom is very interactive. Students read both independently and together, and we often pause to discuss important moments in the story. They write quick reflections, ask questions, and sometimes work in small groups to analyze passages. We also connect the themes of the book to the real world, helping students understand how literature reflects the society we live in.\r\n\r\nSeveral students have been especially engaged with this book. Some students who normally hesitate to participate in discussions have been eager to share their thoughts about the characters and the choices they face. Others have told me that this is the first book they've read that feels connected to issues they see in the world around them. Watching students become invested in a story and confident in sharing their ideas has been incredibly rewarding.\r\n\r\nYour generosity helped bring a book into our classroom that does more than improve reading skills; it helps students build empathy, confidence, and a deeper understanding of the world. Your generosity has made such a positive difference in our classroom, and my students use these materials every single day.\r\n\r\nBecause of your support, our classroom now has inflatable donut ball chairs, bean bags, yoga ball donut seats, and wiggle seat balance discs. These flexible seating options have given students a comfortable way to move while still staying engaged in learning.\r\n\r\nAs we all know, it can be incredibly difficult for 4- and 5-year-olds to sit still for long periods of time. These flexible seating options give my students a healthy and appropriate outlet for movement. When a student feels like they need to wiggle, they can simply go to the shelf, grab a seat, and bring it to their spot on the floor. Having the ability to choose what works best for their bodies has made such a difference.\r\n\r\nWhile the seats are a little large for some of our smaller chairs, students absolutely love using them during floor learning time. It has been wonderful to watch students who sometimes struggle with focus feel more comfortable and confident participating in classroom activities.\r\n\r\nOne of the most meaningful things I have noticed is how naturally students use them to help regulate themselves. When they feel the need to move, they quietly grab a wiggle seat and continue learning without disruption. Because of this, I have seen improvements in both classroom engagement and student behavior.\r\n\r\nYour generosity has helped create a classroom environment where students can move, focus, and learn in ways that support their individual needs. Along with building blocks, fine motor tools for sorting and scooping, sensory foam, and two beautiful light-up tables, these materials have completely transformed how my students learn and explore.\r\n\r\nWith these resources, I was able to create something I have always dreamed of for our school, a Sensory Cozy Calming Corner that could benefit all Pre-K and K students. This special space gives students a place to go when they feel overwhelmed, worried, or simply need a quiet moment to regroup. They love choosing a sensory bin, climbing into the tent, and engaging with hands-on materials that help them relax, focus, and regulate their emotions.\r\n\r\nFor young children, learning how to manage feelings and explore the world through play is just as important as academics.
