My students are resourceful and often ask for dictionaries to look up words they don't understand while they read. The dictionaries that they have access to, at this point, are years old and quite beaten up from use over the years. Updated and multiple dictionaries will allow the students personal agency to comprehend reading at their own pace and discretion. My students also need classroom access to both fiction and nonfiction books for independent reading. Additionally, fictional books such as the Percy Jackson series and Sharon Flake's novels help the students broaden their knowledge of subjects from mythology to bullying. For the students with more concrete interest in learning, informational books about civil rights, the Titanic, weather phenomena, and the human body within ELA help them develop interdisciplinary knowledge of history and science.
