For many, this was their first proper chapter book, and an experience that showed that reading could be full of fun, creativity, and joy. It wasn't just a struggle the entire time.\r\n\r\nThroughout this coming year, headphones will continue to primarily be used to support struggling readers. Research shows that an effective way to support readers who have mastered phonics (letter sounds) but are struggling with fluency (reading entire sentences, instead of one. word. at. a. time.) is listening to a proficient reader while also reading with their eyes. My students love using them to practice solving equations, and keep track of points during games. I will often suggest to a student who is stuck on a problem if they want to grab a white board to complete it, and the joy on their faces when they are given an alternative medium to work on creates an entire mindset shift around the problem.\r\n\r\nThe boards are set up in sets of four and students know they are always able to grab a set to use whenever they need. I even have students who are no longer in my class who will stop by to borrow them for their own math classes. Students have blanched broccoli, baked whole-wheat banana bread, blended all-fruit-no-sugar smoothies, and steamed quinoa for plant-based high-protein grain bowls. \r\n\r\nWe have lots more hands-on learning activities planned, including recipes like trifle and tea cakes. Soon students will be designing their own food products and marketing them at the school-wide Celebration of learning.
