These books reinforce the phonics skills my students are learning. For example, some of the books have words with only short vowel sounds, and others practice skills such as words with a silent e. \r\n\r\nAs the books started to arrive, I placed them in our classroom library. Students were interested in them right away, reading them with a partner for a morning choice activity. Some students who struggle with reading gained more confidence because they had a bin of books with words they knew they could sound out.\r\n\r\nThe \"Moon Dog\" book series, which features teenaged characters, was a favorite. My student laughed out loud when a character tried to hit a ball with a pan after failing with the bat (can you tell this student was practicing reading words with short a?).
