Our shared read aloud has quickly become many students' favorite part of the day. We've been flying through the time of dinosaurs and castles and are already starting the third Magic Tree House book this week! Students are engaged in the story while also developing language and comprehension skills. \r\n\r\nMany first graders are amazed when they use the hand mirrors to watch how their mouth moves when they say different sounds, allowing them to identify and distinguish between those tricky sounds. \r\n\r\nThe Heggerty manual has supported our most challenged readers and has served as a great warm up before our phonics lesson each day. With your help, our intervention team has also seen the value in this resource with my sturggling readers and has begun the process of purchasing their own manuals to use with many struggling readers across grade levels! These particular books are all decodable, and they also hold students' interest. \r\n\r\nEach year I've taught second grade, I've always had a group of students in my class that are just beginning to think of themselves as readers (as well as kids who insist, \"I can't read.\") These books are most popular with these groups of kids, because they provide cool stories written with words that are very simple to sound out. \r\n\r\nAlso, the Flyleaf books progress in a systematic way that I can easily incorporate into students' work. The books fit very well with the current curriculum and system for teaching reading we have at my school. They are one of the most often used reading resources that we have in the classroom. On Friday afternoons, I have students bring their book bags to see what books they have, see if they have books that are a good fit for their evolving decoding skills, and to tell me about what they're interested in reading. \r\n\r\nWe also have a lot of small bags to store reading flashcards that have words with the particular letter-sound correspondences we've been studying. For instance, we have a bag with words like wave, bake, and grape for practicing the \"a\" and \"silent e\" combination. Students like to practice these together.
