After building a sense of community, the Youth Frontiers staff shares the retreat’s goals. They encourage our fourth-grade students to take a closer look at how they’re treating themselves and others at their school. Youth Frontiers empowers kids to be “everyday heroes” by using kindness to include others, to be respectful and to make our school a better place. Throughout the day, students meet in small groups, facilitated by high school or adult leaders, to process what they are learning and experiencing. At the end of the retreat, students get the chance to safely and publicly express how they will show more kindness to their teachers and classmates every day. This project is helping to get both of the fourth-grade classes at our school to this field trip. Our goal is that our fourth graders will understand why and how to make kind choices, increase empathy skills to understand how words and actions affect others, and acquire conflict-resolution skills to safely respond to situations of bullying.
