I serve a diverse population of fifth graders, many who live in poverty. The majority of my students are English Language Learners. My students get free breakfast everyday, qualify for free lunch, and some even participate in Backpack Buddies, a weekly program which supplies kids & their families food during the weekend. Few come to school w/ supplies, so fortunately, we have access to such necessities as pencils and notebooks. However, like all teachers, I spend money out of pocket to fill deficiencies. My students are eager and happy to come to school! Many seem most engaged when their learning allows them to work cooperatively, utilize hands on materials, and have differentiated choices to extend their understanding. The High 5 through Grade 8 school serves about 1200 students. In the past two years, more refugees have enrolled, many w/ no formal schooling. My school offers after school programming as well, at no cost to families to meet the needs of the kids.
