When each packaged arrived, my students' faces brightened with excitement and curiosity. They use the reading materials daily to engage in hands-on learning during reading small groups and centers. Additionally, they used the community helper books to research community helpers and how others have helped their community, and then completed a community project using what they learned. They will continue to use these books as references as they work on writing final product research posters about a community helper of their choice. These magazines and the aligned resources from Scholastic have been an invaluable addition to our math workshop block. Over the last 2 months, my 5th graders have had the opportunity to learn about new topics ranging from monarch butterfly migration patterns, to movie animation, to the math and science of baking cookies! Each day, I see the excitement on students' faces as they open their magazines to learn something new.\r\nEngaging with the SuperSTEM resources has also given my students more confidence in solving word problems, working with data, and writing about math. The magazines give students an accessible way to make connections between text and mathematical operations, and show them the relevance of math across a variety of contexts. In my daily math lessons and monthly assessments, I have seen students grow so much in their ability to identify key information and explain their thinking. Additionally, students are acquiring new academic vocabulary and gaining new knowledge of STEM career paths. The SuperSTEM magazines have been such an invigorating resource for 5th grade math, and it is all made possible by your generous support.","fullyFundedDate":1726086169208,"projectUrl":"project/superstem-magazines-to-integrate-math-s/8460996/","projectTitle":"SuperSTEM Magazines to Integrate Math, Science, and Literacy!","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Ben","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9569171_orig.jpg?crop=519,519,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1754510117715","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9569171"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_110696","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":213,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":91,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":59,"percentWhite":29,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":2,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 4","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":62.5,"schoolId":110696,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Detroit Preparatory Academy on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Detroit Preparatory Academy","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/michigan/michigan-department-of-education/detroit-prep/110696"}
