Your generosity is giving my students the opportunity to work with materials and techniques that we don't normally get to use in the classroom.\r\n\r\nSince we are still early in the school year, my students are currently reviewing the fundamentals of drawing and color. We are spending time practicing observation, proportion, shape, shading, and color mixing so that students can build confidence with the skills they will need throughout the year. These foundational skills will eventually carry over into our sculpture work.\r\n\r\nOur Wire, Plaster, Paint project will take place during the second quarter. Students will construct a human figure from a wire armature, use plaster to build the form, and then paint the finished sculpture. I'm especially excited for students to experience the process of taking an idea from a sketchbook and turning it into a three-dimensional object.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the new materials, they were excited and curious about what they would eventually be able to create with them. Many students have never worked with wire or plaster before, so having access to these materials opens up a completely new area of artmaking for them.\r\n\r\nFor now, our next step is continuing to strengthen those drawing and color fundamentals. As students move into sculpture in the second quarter, they will be able to apply those skills to their three-dimensional figures. It made the project feel fun and unexpected, while also giving them an authentic audience beyond our classroom. Students have been thinking about what kinds of small artworks other students would actually want to collect, while learning about design, presentation, repetition, and creating work on a smaller scale.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to continue creating and restocking the machine with new student-made artwork. It has been especially exciting to see students who were initially unsure about watercolor become more confident as they experimented and discovered techniques that worked for them.\r\n\r\nThe new supplies have allowed me to offer watercolor projects that go beyond simply \"painting a picture.\" Students are learning how to make deliberate choices about materials and techniques while developing patience and control. My students have been putting the new paint markers to use in a poster design project, and they have absolutely loved them.\r\n\r\nFor this project, my 11th and 12th grade students first explored different types of posters, including movie posters, concert and gig posters, scientific and informational posters, and other forms of visual communication. We talked about how artists use typography, color, imagery, and composition to grab an audience's attention and communicate an idea.\r\n\r\nOnce students began designing their own posters, the paint markers quickly became a favorite material. Students loved how bold and vibrant the colors were and how easily they could layer, outline, and add details. The best part was seeing how invested they became in the process. Several students enjoyed the project so much that they chose to make multiple posters instead of stopping after completing the required assignment!\r\n\r\nThe next step for my students is to continue experimenting with the paint markers and applying what they learned about visual communication to new projects. Now that I use an interactive TV, we don't need that projector anymore. Students used to think it was weird to have a random outlet in the ceiling.
