In my class, each student has a plant that they need to keep alive until the end of the school year. One of the first things they do is research the plant's origins and nutrient needs. Then, they test the plant's soil to assess current situation and needs. Your part of the project is essential here. Once they know what is needed, they ameliorate to soil appropriately. We do this as well in the forest behind the school, but that is more out of our control. We do add the results to a full report on the forest for the official property managers. Each donation has made a meaningful difference in creating a clean, organized, comfortable, and engaging learning environment for our students.\r\n\r\nOur new Hoover Power Scrub Deluxe Carpet Cleaner, Shark Navigator Vacuum, and Honeywell QuietSet Tower Fan have helped us keep our classroom fresh, clean, and comfortable—something the students notice every single day. With so much movement and activity in an elementary classroom, these tools have been essential in maintaining a healthy learning space especially being on the carpet for our whole group learning time and our morning meetings. \r\n\r\nThe Canon PIXMA TR8620a Printer and ink cartridges have allowed us to print high-quality classroom materials quickly and reliably at all times of the day. This has been especially helpful for students who benefit from modified assignments, extra visual supports, and making the most during teacher preparation. \r\n\r\nThe colorful floor pillows have transformed our reading and flexible seating spaces, giving students cozy spots to read, collaborate, or take a quiet moment to regroup.\r\n\r\nOur organizational tools—including the moving/storage bags, magnetic clips, pencil parking chart, and coat rack—have helped our classroom run more smoothly. Students are taking more responsibility for their materials, and the room stays tidier and easier to navigate.\r\n\r\nThe new classroom set of headphones have been a tremendous support during independent work, testing, and small-group activities, ensuring every student can focus without distraction. The cheerful colors add to the festive environment in our space too!\r\n\r\nFinally, the paper cutters, guillotine trimmer, and electric pencil sharpeners have made preparing materials so much more efficient. Our sharpeners, in particular, have saved countless instructional minutes and prevented possible messes that could've happened with a hand-held pencil sharpener.\r\n\r\nEach item you provided has had a real, daily impact on our classroom. Because of your generosity, my students have a cleaner, calmer, more organized, and more engaging environment in which to learn and grow. The first day my students saw it, their eyes lit up with excitement and they immediately asked if they could \"try it out.\" We began using it during reading groups, where students practiced writing sight words and breaking words into syllables directly on the table. The ability to quickly erase and try again gave them confidence to take risks without worrying about mistakes, and their engagement has grown tremendously.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite moments happened during math centers, when a group of students worked together to solve word problems. They drew number bonds and equations across the table, bouncing ideas off each other and making learning a true team effort. The whiteboard surface has turned ordinary lessons into interactive projects, and it has become the most popular spot in the classroom.\r\n\r\nAs we move forward, my students will continue using this table to practice decoding strategies in reading, solve multi-step problems in math, and collaborate on creative writing drafts. We had a long, difficult years and the political climate was making students feel apathetic. We decided to re-focus the project on the future. Students were directed to create a vision for a heathy, sustainable, and prosperous future for the world. There were given a few different options for expressing this vision. They could create a zine, a poem, or a fashion design. \r\n\r\nThese projects required students to research current initiatives in their community (Detroit) as a source of inspiration for their projects. Students investigated environmental and community organizations working to improve the lives of people in Detroit and summarized their findings. Next, they choose one project option to convey their vision for the future. One student, collected old clothes from students and created a small quilt to demonstrate methods of up-cycling old clothes instead of sending them to a landfill. Another, created a zine on sustainable gardening practices to show how landscaping can help mitigate the impact of climate change--in Detroit our major issue is flooding.
