Many reluctant readers feel more confident because the combination of pictures and text helps them better understand characters, plot, and vocabulary. These books support comprehension, fluency, and critical thinking while helping students build a love for reading.\r\nStudents eagerly choose graphic novels during independent reading and love discussing the stories with classmates. Some of my struggling readers, who once avoided books, now ask for extra reading time and proudly share what they've finished. These engaging nonfiction texts help introduce important reading skills such as identifying main idea and supporting details, making text connections, using text features like headings, captions, and maps, and strengthening comprehension through discussion and written responses. The articles also help build vocabulary and encourage students to think critically about real-world topics.\r\nReading in our classroom is active, hands-on, and full of conversation. Students gather together to read articles, highlight important information, ask questions, and share their thinking with classmates. We use the magazines during whole-group lessons, small-group discussions, and independent learning time. The high-interest topics keep students engaged and motivated, especially reluctant readers who may struggle with traditional texts.\r\nSeveral students who were hesitant readers at the beginning of the year have shown so much excitement with these new resources. They love reading about animals, science discoveries, current events, and topics that connect to their own lives. Seeing students confidently participate in discussions, raise their hands to share new facts, and genuinely look forward to reading time has been one of the greatest gifts from this project. Your support has helped create meaningful learning experiences that make reading both fun and purposeful.","fullyFundedDate":1772139580978,"projectUrl":"project/hear-the-news/9885402/","projectTitle":"Hear the News!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Guigear","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp3702997_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1480903428085","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/guigear"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_67615","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":237,"numTeachers":18,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":28,"percentWhite":48,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":9,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"13.2:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":72.6,"schoolId":67615,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Rankin Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Rankin Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/michigan/carman-ainsworth-community-school-district/rankin-elementary-school/67615"}
