Your generosity has made such a meaningful difference in our students' daily lives, and I truly cannot thank you enough.\r\n\r\nThis year, I have had the incredible opportunity to open the first autism classroom at Warner Elementary School in Springfield, and creating a classroom where our students feel safe, comfortable, understood, and ready to learn has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career.\r\n\r\nMany of our students are very sensitive to bright or fluorescent lighting and can become overwhelmed by the traditional lights found throughout the school. The lamps donated through this project have made an incredible difference. We are able to turn off the harsh classroom lights and create a softer, more calming environment that allows our students to feel more comfortable and regulated throughout the school day.\r\n\r\nOur calming corner has also become such a special part of our classroom. Students love having a designated space where they can go when they need a break, calm their bodies, or simply have some quiet time. The calming tools and materials have helped us teach students that it is okay to recognize when they need a break and that they have appropriate tools they can use to help themselves regulate.\r\n\r\nWe were also able to receive so many Spot Emotions resources, books, and other social-emotional tools. These materials have given us meaningful, hands-on ways to teach our students about emotions, feelings, communication, and self-advocacy. One of our students especially loves the Spot Emotions materials and has made such amazing progress in using them to communicate when they are feeling down. Seeing a student begin to recognize and advocate for their own emotions is exactly the kind of growth that makes this work so incredibly rewarding.\r\n\r\nBecause our classroom is located in the basement of the school, the additional lighting—including our grass wall and other decorative lights—has made an enormous difference in the atmosphere of our room. Instead of feeling like a typical basement classroom, our space feels warm, cozy, inviting, and peaceful. These seemingly simple additions have helped us create an environment that feels like a safe place for our students.\r\n\r\nEvery item donated has served a purpose beyond simply being something in our classroom. These materials have helped us create a space where our students can regulate, communicate, build independence, learn about themselves, and feel successful.\r\n\r\nAs a new teacher opening the first autism classroom at Warner Elementary, I have put so much thought and love into making this classroom a place where every student feels that they belong. The students track all of their progress throughout the year and by having the specific shelf the students are not losing or damaging the portfolio that will go with them from second grade until fifth grade. In addition the shelf helps the students access different things from scissors and glue to different center games.
