I can't wait to read about their favorite books, their biggest success in school, and their biggest challenge in life. They also have the option to write down questions that they may not feel comfortable asking in front of other students yet. So far, the only two questions have been \"Do you think I should name my cat Augustus or Hercules?\" and \"Who can I suggest more vegetarian lunch options to?\" I love this!\r\n\r\nSophomores read Ruta Sepetys' historical novel Between Shades of Gray for their summer assignment and are currently completing character profiles to help them review for their upcoming assessments. The glue sticks, rulers, and paper have helped them organize all of the information they need for the upcoming gallery walk, which should be an effective review. For their final projects, students tracked a character and analyzed how he, she, or they represented one of the novel's themes. I initially thought most students would choose Avery - and some did - but I also read insightful analyses of Grayson, Xander, and even Nash. One student asked if his mother could borrow the book over winter break (yes, of course!) and she emailed me to say how much she enjoyed discussing the novel with her son.\r\n\r\nStudents are currently reading The Hobbit; last Friday they made character portraits for Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf, and Thorin.
