These stories introduce important literacy and language skills in a way that feels joyful and accessible—students are learning new vocabulary in context, strengthening listening comprehension, and practicing speaking through shared discussions. Many of my multilingual learners are still developing early reading skills in English, so read-aloud time allows them to engage with grade-level ideas and rich storytelling even before they can read the full text independently.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is interactive and welcoming. Students listen, study illustrations, and connect the story to their own lives and cultures. We pause to act out key vocabulary, repeat meaningful phrases, and use sentence frames to help students express their thinking. The books have also given us shared language for writing—students are beginning to use new words and story patterns in their own sentences, drawings, and reflections.\r\n\r\nSome students who were previously quiet during whole-class reading time are now excited to participate. They light up when they recognize familiar traditions, foods, languages, or experiences in a story, and they are eager to share connections with classmates. These books are helping students feel seen and valued while building real English language skills every day. Thank you for investing in stories that are strengthening both literacy and belonging in our classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1768502682025,"projectUrl":"project/stories-that-strengthen-english-read-al/9895223/","projectTitle":"Stories That Strengthen English: Read-Alouds for Multilingual Learners","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. McGrath","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9296768_orig.jpg?crop=1440,1440,x128,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1695415232946","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9296768"},{"teacherId":9296768,"projectId":9586963,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generous support, my students are already using these basic supplies every day in our ESL classroom for reading, writing, and hands-on learning activities. With a wider variety of stories, topics, and characters to explore, students are more excited than ever to read. They are discovering new worlds, learning about different experiences, and finding books that truly spark their interests. Our classroom library has become a place of curiosity, comfort, and joy.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, these new books have helped grow my students' imaginations. I see them making connections, asking thoughtful questions, and using their creativity during reading, writing, and discussions. Students who were once hesitant readers are now eager to choose a book, and confident readers are challenging themselves with new genres and ideas.\r\n\r\nYour generosity has had a lasting impact on my students and their love of reading. Your donations bought us a wonderful mobile book display and many diverse music books. Our students are from every continent. Many are new English speakers or refugees. These new books help them connect their cultures with music. The new library is a big source of pride for our classroom.\r\n\r\nReading in our music class is now about discovery. The books teach us much more than just stories. \"Dancing Hands\" and \"Libba\" teach us about brave, important musicians. Books about instruments, like \"88 Instruments\", teach us how sound is made. We use the Bob Marley books like \"One Love\" to talk about music and big ideas. The Spanish books, like \"¿Quién fue Celia Cruz?\", affirm our students' home languages. This helps all students grow their reading and music knowledge.\r\n\r\nThe new books and display make a huge difference. Students who are learning English found books about their home countries. This makes them feel smart and confident. Now, students always run to the mobile display during free time. They love sharing books like \"Double Bass Blues\" with their friends. Thank you for giving us this powerful tool. It connects their love of music to their passion for reading.","fullyFundedDate":1760693655449,"projectUrl":"project/literacy-in-music/9677560/","projectTitle":"Literacy in Music","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Cottrell","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3088803_orig.jpg?crop=720,720,x121,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1678228601594","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/reilly-music"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_61647","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":471,"numTeachers":40,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":10,"percentBlack":5,"percentWhite":38,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":37,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":7,"gradesServed":"Pre-K - 4","studentTeacherRatio":"11.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":69.8,"schoolId":61647,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Peter W Reilly Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Peter W Reilly Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/massachusetts/lowell-public-schools/peter-w-reilly-elementary-school/61647"}
