In our classroom, a student who isn't ready to write in cursive can still create a scientific diagram using the Apple Pencil. This lets me meet students where they are academically.\r\n\r\nOur science classroom is a lab. Students use the Apple Pencil to label diagrams of the water cycle, sketch what they observe under a microscope camera, or annotate photos they've taken of a plant's growth over several weeks. Instead of static worksheets, students can now record real data, build labeled diagrams by hand, and revise their thinking. This allows me to address any misconceptions in real time before they become embedded in their thinking. These courses strengthened both my academic instruction and the way I support young children socially and emotionally. I am using research based literacy practices, including explicit vocabulary instruction, purposeful read-alouds, movement, visuals, storytelling, and opportunities for children to express their thinking in different ways. I am also more intentional about viewing behavior as communication and using co-regulation, predictable routines, and supportive choices before expecting children to manage difficult emotions independently.\r\nOne of my favorite moments happened recently during the first days of school when a child became extremely upset while separating from family. Instead of pressuring the child to participate, I reduced the demands, provided space, remained available, and allowed the child to observe the classroom until they felt safe. Before long, the child independently joined the group and participated successfully for the rest of the day. That moment reflected so much of what I learned about anxiety, neurodiversity, and responding to challenging behavior with curiosity and compassion rather than assuming defiance.\r\nI am excited to continue combining these social-emotional strategies with what I learned in *Building Comprehension with the Science of Reading* and *Cultivating Creativity with Literacy*. My goal is to create an inclusive classroom where every child can communicate, regulate, take appropriate risks, and develop a strong foundation in literacy. My artists were thrilled to use the new resources. When I first pulled the lacing beads and needles out for my kindergarten students they lit up! I have a new K0 student that is still in the quiet period of english language development and adjusting to being away from home in a school setting for the first time. They have not really responded enthusiastically to our painting projects or color songs, but once I pulled out the beads they immediately put down their stuffy and started lacing the colorful beads. It was so exciting to see this response! In fact, it allowed me to observe their fine motor skills as they are only 3 years old and have been thrust into an art class with both K0 and K1 students in the end of a school year. \r\n\r\nMy K2 students were also thrilled when I said they could \"sew\" the beads onto the fabric. I watched as they re-threaded the needles after watching me and began to work a running stitch across the frame. They didn't know it was a running stitch but they knew they were having fun sewing. :-) Students waited for their turn to sew as I only set up one frame to start so that I could observe and assist a small group at a time.
