This project was the beginning of something really special, an empty courtyard being transformed into an outdoor learning space for our youngest students. With the containers, we were able to have a place to easily store gardening supplies and outdoor toys. \r\n\r\nOur young students love using the gardening gloves and buckets to dig outside. To their great delight they have discovered worms, bulbs, and shiny rocks. We keep the balance scale and tape measure outdoors so they children can practice using tools to measure in authentic, meaningful ways. \r\n\r\nThe chains and locks have kept the materials safe and accessible for over two years! It's been amazing to watch their confidence grow as they manipulate magnetic letters, match picture cards, and use hands-on tools that make abstract phonics skills feel concrete and fun.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite moments was watching a small group proudly blend sounds together to read their very first words using the new CVC word cards. Their faces lit up with pride—one student even shouted, \"I can read!\" It was such a powerful reminder of how meaningful, interactive learning experiences can spark joy and confidence in even our youngest readers.\r\n\r\nRight now, we're building on this momentum with a \"Word Builders Workshop\" project, where students rotate through literacy stations to explore short vowel sounds and create mini books featuring the words they've learned. Children have used the play dough to create on their own, or recreate the plants and animals we are learning about in class.
