We've been working our way up to this task by doing mini versions of research papers. One of the challenging parts of translating research notes into a research paper is figuring out how to organize those notes. What belongs where? What will the thematic parts of the paper be? It can really help to have physical note cards to move around and rearrange as we consider different ways to communicate ideas. \r\n\r\nMy students were really excited when they saw the index card booklets. They chose their favorite color and got right to work. Right now we are in the end of the research phase of this project, and they have been refining the way they take notes based on the vision of manipulating these physical cards as they move into the pre-writing phase next week. \r\n\r\nThe other pieces of the package were less visible to students, but have no less on an impact. These snacks have transformed our meetings from a simple gathering into a truly welcoming and supportive environment.\r\nThe snacks are a critical component of our Self-Esteem Group and the Mental Health Club. They serve as an immediate, practical way to address basic needs, making it easier for students to open up and focus on the deep work of mental health. For instance, just last week in our Self-Esteem Group, one student arrived after missing breakfast. Instead of being distracted by hunger, they were able to grab a snack, settle in, and actively participate in a discussion about positive self-talk. The simple act of sharing food helps create a sense of community and trust, which is essential for these sensitive conversations.\r\nThe students' reaction to seeing the snack bin is always a mix of relief and excitement! Knowing that a small comfort is available reduces their anxiety and makes them look forward to attending the groups. They often comment on how much better they can focus when they aren't hungry. Our next steps for these groups are to continue building on the positive momentum. In the Mental Health Club, we are planning a long-term project on coping mechanisms, and the reliable presence of the snacks will continue to foster a safe space where students feel comfortable exploring these vital, sometimes challenging, topics together.","fullyFundedDate":1755909033673,"projectUrl":"project/we-need-snacks-help-students-maintain-t/9631217/","projectTitle":"We Need Snacks! They look at source materials on the whiteboards, use the markers to brainstorm ideas, and then refine their thinking by listening to their peers in scientists circles.\r\n\r\nThese routines have increased student engagement, leading to stronger written communication.
