My students learn how nutrition, health and the environment are all connected. Experimentation and modeling are key skills in biology, and these materials will help students engage in those practices. Since many students will be learning from home, being able to grow plants in their own kitchens will give them opportunities to learn away from the computer screen and to make connections from the curriculum to what they see in the plants. Students will design experiments, collect data about the plant growth, and create models to show their learning. Play-dough and pipe cleaners lend themselves well to modeling viruses, DNA, cells and more. Since high school students don't often get to "play", I have seen how my students' ideas and creativity come out when they get move materials in their hands.
