Your gift meant that having an under-resourced classroom was not a problem I needed to address in my first year of teaching. It meant that my students got to start their year off with the basics they needed to learn and that no student went without. It meant that I could set up routines and structures for a productive learning community which students will benefit from all school year. \r\n\r\nYour gift meant that my students didn't have to experience a lack in resources. They started the year off simply having all they needed and using the materials as children do. While it would've been exciting to see reactions, I'm glad they don't know a classroom that lacked the things they needed. Thank you for giving so that they could have this experience. \r\n\r\nWe have done so much with these materials all year. In fact, I have just submitted a new project for the supplies I didn't realize I would need more of (whiteboard markers and pencils are at the top of that list!) We have modeled phenomena on chart paper, we have stocked binders full of student work on migration patterns in Serengeti and zombie fires in the Arctic, we have collaborated at whiteboards, and we are ending our year penciling so many explanations of scientific phenomena to make our thinking visible. \r\n\r\nI'm grateful for your support and for the way it has allowed me to support students so far this year. We've been working our way up to this task by doing mini versions of research papers. One of the challenging parts of translating research notes into a research paper is figuring out how to organize those notes. What belongs where? What will the thematic parts of the paper be? It can really help to have physical note cards to move around and rearrange as we consider different ways to communicate ideas. \r\n\r\nMy students were really excited when they saw the index card booklets. They chose their favorite color and got right to work. Right now we are in the end of the research phase of this project, and they have been refining the way they take notes based on the vision of manipulating these physical cards as they move into the pre-writing phase next week. \r\n\r\nThe other pieces of the package were less visible to students, but have no less on an impact.
