My students are 10th graders in a Public School. We are an open enrollment school and we take everyone. The classes are very diverse and have students of all ability levels and many different language backgrounds. Last year, I had almost all of them as Engineering students and we ended the year by building model houses (6 feet x 6 feet x 4 feet) and cooling them using methods we studied in class. The students also had to take the MCAS as a graduation requirement. Most passed and I do not have to focus as much on test prep so we can do things that are more focused on student interest, rather than the state curriculum. Motivation is usually an issue, especially at the end of the year. I assign a final project that allows the students to be creative and focus on their strengths in the class. In general, most students earn much higher grades on the final than during the year because they are so engaged trying to meet such a daunting challenge.
