The new books helped students build much more than basic reading ability. Many of the texts also exposed students to diverse perspectives and real-world topics, helping them build empathy, background knowledge, and critical thinking. Vocabulary development is another major focus, as students encounter rich language in meaningful contexts rather than isolated word lists.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is active and purposeful. Students read independently, in small groups, and as a whole class. They discuss ideas with peers, ask questions, and support their thinking with evidence from the book. I model strategies such as predicting, questioning, and summarizing, then students practice those strategies on their own. Reading is not just about finishing a book! They enjoyed learning how to code them and were able to utilize coding lessons in class to help them with the rovers. We collected information from the robot's sensors and graphed data that we collected. We programmed the robots to follow a set of commands that made them move forward, turn, and move backward all while gathering data.
