While these items might look like simple toys to an outside observer, in the hands of a ten-year-old, they have become essential tools for emotional regulation, social development, and cognitive sharpening.\r\n For many of my students, the transition into the more demanding academic expectations of fourth grade can be overwhelming. We have found that tactile fidget tools, such as sensory rings, stress balls, and marble slides, act as anchors for their attention. By giving their hands a quiet, repetitive task, their minds are actually freed to focus more deeply on the lesson at hand. This has significantly reduced restless energy and helped students stay grounded and attentive during direct instruction.\r\n Beyond individual focus, these tools have fostered a sense of community that is truly transformative. In an era dominated by digital screens, seeing students sit across from one another over a board game is a joy. These moments encourage vital social interaction, where students learn the nuances of turn-taking, negotiation, and healthy sportsmanship. I have watched typically shy students find their confidence while explaining rules or strategizing with a peer, building a level of communication that carries over into our collaborative academic work.\r\n Furthermore, puzzles and strategy games have challenged the students to think critically and persist through frustration. Whether they are fitting together a complex jigsaw piece or planning moves in a game, they are strengthening their spatial awareness and logic. Perhaps most importantly, these activities provide a vital mental reset. After a high-intensity math or writing block, this time allows their brains to decompress. They return to their desks not just entertained, but refreshed and ready to tackle the remainder of the day's lessons with renewed stamina and a clear mind.\r\n Watching our classroom transform from a place of quiet stress to a vibrant hub of collaborative learning has been incredibly rewarding. These tools have helped us build a culture where every student's need for movement, connection, and mental rest is honored, ultimately making them more successful learners.","fullyFundedDate":1758804876055,"projectUrl":"project/wiggle-giggle-and-game/9511003/","projectTitle":"Wiggle, Giggle, and Game!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Rees","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8804827_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1759453434817","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8804827"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_64811","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":423,"numTeachers":32,"percentFrplEligible":71,"percentAsian":2,"percentBlack":14,"percentWhite":17,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":61,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":2,"gradesServed":"3 - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"13.2:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":64.2,"schoolId":64811,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Oak View Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Oak View Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/maryland/montgomery-county-public-schools/oak-view-elementary-school/64811"}
