Before your gift, the books our community donated sat in stacks waiting for a place to belong. Today they're organized on shelves at eye level, the pillows are piled in the corner, and the lamp gives off a soft glow that makes the space feel completely different from the rest of the building. It finally looks like what we always hoped it would be: a place to rest.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the finished space, the reaction was immediate. Several of them stopped in the doorway and asked, \"Wait, we can actually sit here?\" One student who usually comes in tense and quiet sank into the pillows, picked up a book, and said it felt like \"somebody's living room.\" Another asked if she could come back during lunch. That's exactly the feeling we wanted: not an office, not a classroom, but somewhere that feels safe and a little bit like home.\r\n\r\nStudents now use the Comfort Corner in a few ways. Some come in for five or ten minutes when a class, a friendship, or something at home feels like too much, and they read until they're ready to go back. Others drop in during lunch just to be somewhere calm. We've also started using the space during check-ins, so a student can settle in with a book first and talk when they're ready. Having the books visible and easy to browse has made a big difference, because students now pick stories up on their own instead of waiting to be offered one.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to make the Comfort Corner even more theirs. We're inviting students to write short recommendation cards for books they've loved so the next reader knows what to try, and we're gathering their suggestions for titles to add so the collection keeps reflecting who they are. We're also building simple reset activities, like journaling prompts and breathing cards, to sit alongside the books for students who need a different way to decompress.\r\n\r\nThis project was about finishing what our community started, and you made that possible.
