The STEAM class is working on this project. Despite the amount of time that has passed, the impact of your generosity is still present! Our school's family math night is an annual treasured event that brings our community together to have fun, engage in new learning and help create memories. Students still talk about the projects and games they made and played. It helps build a collective background knowledge that teachers reactivate and students use to apply to their learning. \r\n\r\nThe 2025-2026 Family Math Night was all about finding the joy in many of the math concepts we as adults take for granted. A foundational math principle for developing fluency is that students need substantial and enjoyable practice. Our math night directly serves that basic rule. Students practiced the addition facts that make 10 using art. They studied their multiplication facts by playing fun games with their friends, older siblings and loving adults. They fortified their geometry vocabulary by building figures with clay, paper and magnets. This project enabled our fifth graders to learn about sailing. Students were able to learn about how wind effects a sailboat. After learning about the parts of the boat and how a boat uses wind to move, the students created a wind powered car. The first step is that they drew out their plan to build the wind powered car. The second step was to work with a partner and figured out how to put the car together to get it to work. The students enjoyed testing the wind powered cars and figured out how to make them go faster.
