Our school is the most ethnically diverse and socially/economically disadvantaged in the state of Maine. The students in our building need encouragement and a great deal of guidance to engage in their learning. In many of their homes, English is a second language and adult illiteracy is prevalent. Many of my students do not have access to books at home or to the public library. This year my class is a 4/5 split with a four to one male to female ratio. My students need to be immersed in literature and allowed the opportunity to benefit from the knowledge and pure joy that reading can offer.
