I give out birthday buttons as well as prizes for outstanding work in our school library. We can take the old books that are either ripped and ratty or falling apart, and I can use the pictures inside to make the buttons. She walked our youngest learners through how simple shapes come together to form energetic graphic novel characters. The room was filled with giggles, wide eyes, and eager hands raised to answer and ask questions. For our 3–5 Students, Maris took a deeper dive into her process as both a writer and an illustrator. She shared how her passion for science fuels her books, giving our older students an inspiring look at how research, sketching, revision, and storytelling.\r\n\r\nHaving a published author in our building turned abstract books on a shelf into tangible, reachable dreams.
