They have problems working in groups, empathy, and making good decisions. I quickly set the music curriculum to the side this year to work on Social-Emotional Learning.\r\n\r\nOver the course of the past eighteen weeks, we have covered lessons from every category of SEL. It is slowly paying off. We have gone from lessons breaking down within the first five minutes to a full hour lesson where most of the class shares. I have used the conversation cubes over the past several weeks and they are great ice-breakers. The students are now able to work in groups. They are very creative in the way they use their imagination. Students learned how to manage icy and snowy driving conditions—with the number one rule: DRIVE SLOW. After the presentation, students built their own winter car emergency kits to keep on hand, including hat & gloves, thermal and fleece blankets, chapstick, snacks, flashlights, and snow brush/scrapers. \r\n\r\nStudents were excited when they saw the items laid out before them knowing they would receive a practical backpack to take as a reminder of what they learned in the classroom. By connecting knowledge to real world applications, students are more likely to retain the information when needed most. This activity quickly highlighted the importance of winter car safety as students shared they did not have ice scrapers. Some responses were \"Now I don't have to use a credit card to scrape ice!\" and \"this will be so much better than trying to use an old shirt from my trunk!\".
