As a small school in a rural neighborhood, we (along with many other districts) are facing the hardships of budget cuts. Essential items are only replaced in dire circumstances. A student needs a reliable desk to complete work and to learn. Our desks are very old and wobbly. Some have bent legs, and on some, the screws to adjust the height are stripped-out and the legs will collapse at random, causing the desk to flip over. This is a major safety concern.
How are my students supposed to learn when they do not have a sturdy surface on which to write? Since so many of the screws are stripped, either bolts have been drilled into the legs or duct tape has been applied as a temporary fix, but then I can't adjust the heights of the desk. Some students have desks too low or too high because I cannot adjust them.
Funding this project will make my student's (and my) day! They will no longer have to wedge their desk up against their neighbors to stop the wobbling. Erasing work during tests will no longer be a distraction because of the desk rocking back and forth. I will no longer cringe in fear when a hear a loud thump of a desk hitting the floor hoping a finger or toe isn't caught underneath. With the desks I am replacing, I plan on going through the desks that are in better shape and giving them to other teachers in the building who also need replacement desks.
