In kindergarten, the journey to reading begins with phonemic awareness—the ability to hear and manipulate individual sounds. These tubs provide a tactile, multisensory way for my students to connect a physical object, like a tiny \"apple\" or \"bear,\" to the letters we are learning. When the students first saw the colorful tubs organized on their new stand, the room was filled with \"oohs\" and \"ahs.\" They treated each miniature object like a tiny treasure, and their faces lit up with curiosity as they began exploring the \"secret\" items hidden inside each letter.\r\n\r\nWe use these resources every day during our small-group rotations and \"word work\" centers. A favorite moment recently occurred during a \"Sound Scavenger Hunt,\" where students \"rescued\" items from a sensory bin and returned them to the correct letter tub by identifying the starting sound. Seeing a student hold up a tiny \"dinosaur,\" emphasize the /d/ sound, and proudly place it in the \"D\" tub is a clear indicator of their growing phonetic confidence. This hands-on interaction is exactly what has helped my kindergarteners stay engaged and reach their reading goals.\r\n\r\nAs we move forward, our next steps involve using these objects to begin \"segmenting\" and \"blending\" simple three-letter words. We will be taking objects from the tubs—like a cat or a pin—and using them to build CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words together. This transition from identifying single sounds to building full words is a major milestone. Thanks to your generosity, my students have the physical tools they need to turn these foundational sounds into the stories they will soon be reading on their own!","fullyFundedDate":1613589758866,"projectUrl":"project/letter-sounds-today-readers-tomorrow/5425067/","projectTitle":"Letter Sounds Today; Readers Tomorrow","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Kilgore","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7765944_orig.jpg?crop=2059,2059,x0,y631&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1729370800410","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/shearerkindergarten"},{"teacherId":7765944,"projectId":7424381,"letterContent":"On behalf of my energetic kindergarteners and myself, I want to express my deepest gratitude for your recent donation of four Flex-Space Premium Floor Seats. As a long-time supporter of Phalen Leadership Academy, you already know that our scholars are capable of amazing things when they have the right environment. This project was particularly special because it solved a major classroom hurdle regarding comfort and focus during collaborative work.\r\n\r\nBefore your gift, floor work often meant slouching or constant fidgeting, which can be a real distraction for five-year-olds. Now, these seats have completely transformed our learning space. The back support on these seats allows my students to sit comfortably at our floor table for much longer periods, meaning their minds are free to focus on phonics, math centers, and partner reading rather than their posture.\r\n\r\nThe scholars feel incredibly special using this \"premium\" equipment; it has turned our floor table into the most popular spot in the room! It is partners like you who make the Phalen Leadership Academy community feel like a family. Your consistent commitment to our school ensures that our scholars have a classroom that doesn't just meet their basic needs, but truly inspires them to do their best work.\r\n\r\nThank you for being such a dedicated champion for our students and for helping us grow our brains while sitting comfortably. Here is a more natural, \"human\" version that sounds like it's coming directly from a teacher who is excited to be in the classroom.\r\n\r\nDear Supporters,\r\n\r\nI wanted to reach out and say a huge thank you for funding our new Lakeshore book display! Our project, \"Readers are Leaders,\" is officially up and running, and the classroom feels completely different because of it.\r\n\r\nThe First Impression\r\nYou should have seen their faces when they walked in and saw the display for the first time. One of my students actually yelled, \"It looks like a real library!\" Before this, our books were mostly tucked away in bins where you could only see the spines. Having the covers facing out has made a world of difference—it's like the books are finally calling out to them.\r\n\r\nHow It's Changing Our Day\r\nWe're using the display every single day during our independent reading block. It's much easier for the kids to \"shop\" for a book that actually interests them. Just yesterday, I saw two students who usually aren't big readers standing by the display, pointing at a cover and talking about the art. That's a win I didn't see happening before we had this.\r\n\r\nWhat's Next?\r\nOur next step is a project I'm calling \"Student Picks.\" Each week, a different student will be our \"Featured Leader\" and get to choose which books go on the top shelf to recommend to their classmates. It's a great way to build their confidence and get them talking to each other about what they're reading.\r\n\r\nYour gift did more than just organize our room; it made my students feel like their reading time is important.
