Having the tools to be able to easily color mark a text for patterns is such an easy visual way to begin to find meaning within a text. Plus with 5 different colors at our finger tips, students aren't having to dig through their bags for another colored highlighter (or I don't have to dig through my desk for one!) .\r\n\r\nMy students will be sitting for their May IB exams and rest assured they will be taking their highlighters into the paper 1 exam with them.\r\n\r\nBonus! A math teacher emailed me shortly after students recieved the highlighters because they were using them in his class too. Yes, we may have collected our ideas, formulated them in to poems and paragraphs on the screen, but once the work has been printed it suddenly becomes 'published.' \r\n\r\nOur most recent example of published work comes from a group of seniors who wrote their own collection of poetry on a historical event. Not only did they have to research and create a work of poetry, they also had to design a cover and format each of the pages as a cohesive book. The students love to stop by and help clean up, too! Watching them take responsibility for their space is such a joy for me.\r\n\r\nThe pencils, highlighters, erasers, glue sticks and scissors finally have a home in the little boxes at each table, as well as some stray sticky notes. These act like fidgets for many of the students, and I often find little works of art created by them. This is also heartwarming, as this means that they feel safe to create in the room, all thanks to your donations.\r\nFinally, the hooks allow me to hang my things each morning, which helps me to feel organized at the start of the day. As you can see, they are significantly slimmer with the over-ear design. During our labs, I have spent noticibly less time reminding students to wear their goggles, which was the intended goal! They work easily with a variety of headgear and hair styles, are less restrictive against the face, and all fit on just one or two rows of my cabinet as you can see in the picture.\r\n\r\nWe do a lot of labs in chemistry class. Another picture shows the culminating procedure designed by one group that built on the four prior labs of our last unit to design their own self-heating pack. We also received pads, toothpaste with toothbrushes, and deodorant for the students. We have a hygiene cart that we are able to maintain because of generous donors, and it includes everything that students need to feel clean, fresh, and secure.\r\n\r\nAs teachers, we build relationships with our students by providing for their physical and social needs, as well as their academic needs. Generous donors allow us to keep a stock of these important hygiene items, like toothpaste, pads, deodorant, lotions, chap stick, and hand sanitizer. This will always be an important part of my mission as a teacher - to make my students feel comfortable in class and supported in all aspects of their life. As a donor, you will also be part of this important journey.
