Seeing them so deeply engaged and eager to read in Spanish is the ultimate reward.\r\n\r\nAs a 5th-year teacher, I know firsthand how difficult it can be to find quality Spanish resources for a bilingual classroom. They immediately wanted to know when they'd get to use them, and were thrilled to find out that they'd be using them right away as part of our Insects study.\r\nThese resources allowed my students to independently explore and deepen their knowledge, which is so important for preschool aged children. For example, they were able to use the child friendly view finders to investigate many different insects, and were so excited to point out when they discovered something to reinforce what we'd been learning. \"Look! The butterfly has six legs!\" \"Wow, I can see the ant's three body parts!\" Other items such as the giant insect stampers allowed my students to create beautiful artwork while practicing scientific vocabulary. Similarly, the insect floor puzzle encouraged my students to work together while reinforcing insect knowledge. \"I'm making the grasshopper. Can you pass me the piece with its abdomen? The sorting mats also allowed my students to apply and deepen their scientific knowledge as they sorted insects vs spiders, bugs with 6 legs vs bugs with 8 legs, bugs with wings vs bugs with no wings, etc. \r\nBecause of the knowledge gained using these resources, the next step of our study, watching our caterpillars become butterflies, was even more meaningful. My students were thrilled when I opened the boxes in front of them and we discovered that they contained caterpillars. After reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar, the students already had some ideas about how the caterpillars would change.\r\n\r\nWe placed each caterpillar habitat in a tray on top of a table where students could easily observe them. Each week, we recorded our observations in journals called My Butterfly. We counted the days that had passed, discussed how the caterpillars were growing, and learned about each stage of their life cycle.\r\n\r\nThe students became very attached to the butterflies and were sad when it was time to say goodbye. Some students even searched for them during recess so they could say hello. This hands-on experience brought science to life and created lasting memories for our class.\r\nWe are incredibly grateful for this wonderful learning opportunity and classroom experience.
