My classroom library is used daily. It is a place that inspires, creates escapes, and builds understanding and empathy. Students demonstrate community and responsibility by taking care of the books and maintaining the library’s organization. They build discussion skills when they excitedly share their latest reads with friends and teachers. These books will add a powerful layer of diversity and engagement to the print-rich classroom library I am building for my students which currently lacks a solid selection of graphic novel options as well and opportunities for students to lead lit circles. We know the more students read, the better readers they become, which is why I want to provide my students with a variety of texts at varying reading levels that represent an array of viewpoints, experiences, and interests. I love to see them racing to the classroom library during independent reading time because they can’t wait to get back to that special book!
