The carpet might seem like a small thing, but for my students it means a lot to have a comfortable space where they can gather together, relax a little, and focus on learning.\r\n\r\nWe use the carpet every day during our morning meeting and small group lessons. My students are high school juniors and seniors, but many of them benefit from structured routines and spaces that feel welcoming and calm. The carpet has become our community space where we sit together to read, talk about current events, and practice communication skills. Sitting together on the carpet helped the students feel more comfortable sharing their thoughts and listening to each other's perspectives. It created a space where everyone felt included in the conversation.\r\n\r\nNext, we will continue using the carpet as our gathering space for discussions, social-emotional learning activities, and collaborative reading. My goal is to keep building students' confidence with speaking, listening, and sharing their ideas with their peers. Something as simple as a carpet has helped create a sense of community in our classroom, and that makes a big difference for my students. My students and I were so excited when it arrived! Many of them learn best when they are close to the teacher and can see, hear, and participate in small-group conversations. When they first saw the table set up, a few of them immediately asked if this was our new reading table. They couldn't wait to sit down and get started. That moment alone reminded me how much the environment matters for helping students feel ready to learn.\r\n\r\nWe already use the table every day during small-group instruction. Most of my students are juniors and seniors in high school, but they are working hard to build their reading and communication skills. The horseshoe table allows me to sit directly across from them so we can read together, practice comprehension questions, and work through vocabulary as a group. Sitting together at the table helped students feel comfortable enough to share their thoughts about the stories we read and connect them to real-life experiences.\r\n\r\nWe will continue using the table for small group reading, writing practice, and discussion as we work on building confidence with communication and comprehension. Having a space where students can sit together, see each other, and engage in conversation has already made a huge difference. They had a hard time waiting until the books were processed as they wanted to borrow them right out of the amazon boxes. As I've mentioned before with these grants, my students often only eat some of the school lunch, and it's not enough. These snacks really do help students concentrate and have a happier school day.
