In the school social work office, we often say that \"you can't teach a hungry child,\" and your support has allowed us to turn that philosophy into a daily reality.\r\n\r\nHow we are using the new resources:\r\nThese resources are being used to stock our \"Grab-and-Go\" nutrition station and to provide supplemental weekend bags for students facing food insecurity at home. We are using these items to bridge the gap for students who arrive late due to their long commutes and miss school breakfast, as well as those who need a quick energy boost to get through high-rigor subjects like Physics or Math.\r\n\r\nA specific moment that stands out involved a student who has been struggling with focus and fatigue. After visiting the station for a protein-rich snack, they shared that they felt \"awake enough to actually participate\" in their afternoon lab. It was a powerful reminder that sometimes the best academic intervention is simply a full stomach.\r\n\r\nStudent reactions:\r\nThe reaction from the students was one of immediate relief and excitement. When they first saw the variety of snacks and meal items, one student exclaimed, \"Wait, we can actually just take what we need?\" There was a visible shift in the energy of the office—it transformed from a place where students come only for \"problems\" into a space of community and care. They were particularly touched by the quality of the items, noting that it felt like someone truly cared about their well-being outside of just their grades.\r\n\r\nNext steps:\r\nOur next step is to integrate these resources into a \"Life Skills and Self-Advocacy\" project. I am working with a small group of students to help them track their own energy levels throughout the day and identify when they need to advocate for a nutritional break. We are also beginning a \"Food and Focus\" log where students can reflect on how consistent nutrition impacts their ability to stay regulated during stressful testing periods.\r\n\r\nYour contribution has provided much more than just food; you have provided the fuel our students need to pursue their dreams of going into the medical field and beyond. One student, who often struggles with anxiety, immediately gravitated toward the soft blankets. My students were shocked that people they've never met care enough to send them high-quality resources.\r\nWe've already put the arts and crafts supplies to incredible use. This month, we worked together on a Black History Month collage. While the students cut, pasted, and designed, we sat together with cups of hot chocolate. The floor cushions made an immediate impact- kids love them! The standing desk hit a few snags on the plan. The desk you funded for me is a top of the line, amazing model. Due to this, it was shipped in two parts-- enter the first sang. The first box had my name on it, but the second did not. Poor box spent over a month in package purgatory until we found it. Rescued, the box is now with me, but we encountered the next snag-- since school started, more desks / students have been added to all the rooms I teach in, and the rooms I'm teaching in are not the ones I was supposed to be in when I put up the request for this desk. The previous rooms had large amounts of space where this desk would easily fit.
