It's always the most popular books that get lost, are unreturned, or otherwise go missing. This is frustrating for other students who want to read the book, especially if it's part of a series!\r\n\r\nWe really appreciate the opportunity to replace Bad Guys, Babysitters Club, Dog Man, and Diary of a Wimpy Kid, in multiple languages. So many students are obsessed with these books! Our newcomers are particularly excited and grateful to access these popular stories in Spanish-- they already are adapting to a new home, a new school, new cultural expectations, and a new climate. Being able to read popular books gives them a chance to fit in by being in the know about what's hot in reading and literature.\r\n\r\nWe look forward to reading (and re-reading) these books in the library. My students love the pictures in the graphic novels which support their reading. I added the books and students love independent reading time. When they finish with their work the first question they ask is if they can independently read.\r\n \r\nMy reluctant reader has found the PAWS books and is starting to read them at home. His mom wrote me an email when he choose to read and said he liked the books. But after approximately 150 students move through our learning space each day, the power of a Clorox wipe is invaluable. Students are happy to scrub stray crayon marks off their tables, and with cold, flu, and Covid season ramping up, the peace of mind of not having to ration out wipes is pretty significant.\r\n\r\nHaving enough band-aids is another joy. Not having to send students to the office for a bandage saves us valuable learning time, and sometimes a simple band-aid is attention enough to distract from the pain of a fresh paper cut or recess-acquired scrape. The colors and designs are a big hit. The biggest hits so far have been in Hilo, a lesser known science-fiction graphic novel series, and of course, mega popular series like Baby-sitters Club, Bad Guys, and Dog Man.\r\n\r\nWhen students have choice in reading, they will read more, more frequently, and more enthusiastically. This is evident in the number of circulations in these series. It is also exciting to tell my students, again for the Hilo series, that the volumes we were missing are now available.\r\n\r\nNow more than ever we need to teach our students to be critical readers. These books are typically some of the most popular titles, and in Spanish, which is a crucial need in our library collection. The students' reactions to a full shelf of Tipos Malos and a full basket of Sofia Martinez titles was predictably joyous, but no less fulfilling to hear.\r\n\r\nCirculation has been frequent with these titles and there is a shorter waiting list this year for everything (except Dog Man. There will never be enough copies of Dog Man). It's nice to be only number 2 on a hold list rather than 11, as we were experiencing last year. The gaps in our collection are much fewer and the students can read more of their preferred titles, which is the gateway to expanding our horizons and trying books outside of our comfort zone.","fullyFundedDate":1742921953953,"projectUrl":"project/lost-library-books-leave-us-low/9192779/","projectTitle":"Lost Library Books Leave us Low","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Davidson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp86384_orig.png?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1683494091702","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mrs-suedavidson"},{"teacherId":86384,"projectId":9192659,"letterContent":"My Baby-sitters club groupies are delighted with the books that this project has provided for our library collection. The only time the shelf was full was during the summer break! It is so exciting to see their faces and hear the reaction when the volume they have been waiting for is discovered in the BSG section. (A new installment is being released next month, and they are already on pins and needles with anticipation!)\r\n\r\nThere are little cohorts of students who organize the order in which they will checkout these books, and plenty of students who make recommendations of which installment is the best. I'm thrilled that my Spanish-speaking newcomer students can now access these titles more readily. I've even had a couple of 4th graders give the old-school chapter books a try--our student-donated set isn't extensive but it's enough for a taste.\r\n\r\nFinally, I'm thrilled to report that this year's second graders have discovered the series (some through siblings, some through friends) and are starting their Baby-sitters Club journey. I wanted to take a moment to share the incredible impact your donations have had on my students—not just in their reading skills, but in their love for learning.\r\n\r\nMany of you are passionate readers yourselves, and you understand how a good book can open up a world of imagination, connection, and critical thinking. That's exactly what's happening in our classroom. These new texts have helped us dive into important reading skills like making inferences, analyzing character development, identifying themes, and exploring different perspectives. We've also used these books to strengthen vocabulary, improve reading fluency, and build thoughtful discussion skills.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is now a more dynamic, engaging experience. Instead of just reading silently or answering questions on paper, students are participating in literature circles, partner discussions, creative projects, and even mini-debates. Our classroom library has become a buzzing hub of curiosity, where students gather during free time just to read or talk about what they're reading. That kind of excitement is something truly special to witness.\r\n\r\nI'd love to share a quick story: One of my students, who used to avoid reading and struggled to find books that interested him, recently picked up one of the new titles and has been hooked ever since. He's now reading daily, sharing his thoughts confidently in group discussions, and even asked if he could take the book home over the weekend. That kind of transformation speaks volumes.\r\n\r\nAnother student, a quiet and thoughtful reader, recently told me, \"This book feels like it was written just for me.\" Your support made that connection possible.\r\n\r\nThank you for giving my students access to books that reflect their interests, challenge their thinking, and inspire their growth. We put this into practice in many ways, one being that we are constantly building our classroom libraries. Our classroom library is probably the most important part of the room. It is the first thing people notice when they walk in and takes up a large corner of the room. More importantly, students use it daily to choose books to read. I strongly believe that the best way to become a better reader is to read. Students spend time each day reading self-selected books for enjoyment, to learn new things, and to practice the skills and strategies they are learning.\r\n\r\nBecause our library is such an important part of our classroom and learning, it needs to be easy to access. The books need to be organized and labeled in a way that allows students to find what they are looking for. We have begun organizing books by genre and topic, but have a ways to go. The bins you have helped us purchase will allow the library to be user friendly. The students will be able to find what they are looking for. They will allow us to add categories as needed.\r\n\r\nThanks again for your generous donation. It helps make our room more student friendly, allowing us to spend more time doing the important job of becoming better readers.","fullyFundedDate":1743010059178,"projectUrl":"project/a-place-for-everything/9044460/","projectTitle":"A Place for Everything","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Hodges","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp59256_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1448421982837","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/59256"},{"teacherId":6101393,"projectId":5040346,"letterContent":"Thank you for helping us prove that math really is fun you can count on! Thanks to your kindness, my students now have access to additional 3D printing resources, allowing them to engage in meaningful, hands-on learning experiences that spark creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.\r\n\r\nMany of my students are English Language Learners from low-income backgrounds, and having access to 3D printing has opened up a world of possibilities for them. With these new tools, they have been able to design and create their own projects, turning digital models into real objects. Two of our most exciting projects so far have been \"Create Your Own Keychain\" and \"Create Your Own Snowflake.\"\r\n\r\nIn the keychain project, students explored Tinkercad to design personalized keychains, learning to manipulate shapes, letters, and dimensions to bring their ideas to life. They faced challenges along the way—adjusting sizes, ensuring their designs were printable, and troubleshooting issues when things didn't turn out as expected—but through persistence and problem-solving, they created unique and functional keychains they were proud to take home.\r\n\r\nFor the snowflake project, students explored symmetry and pattern design, using the 3D printer to transform their digital designs into intricate snowflakes. This activity encouraged them to experiment, refine their work, and understand how small adjustments in their design could impact the final printed object. Seeing their eyes light up as they held their finished snowflakes for the first time was a truly magical moment.\r\n\r\nThese projects are not only teaching my students how to use technology but also fostering creativity, resilience, and confidence in their abilities. Your generosity has given them opportunities to think like designers, engineers, and artists—all while having fun and developing 21st-century skills that will benefit them in the future.\r\n\r\nThank you for believing in my students and for making this incredible learning experience possible.
