The fifth and sixth grade students in my classroom encounter many obstacles. First and foremost, these students have failed to keep up academically with their peers at their grade level. As a result, they are placed in an after school reading and math program which also includes one class a week of fitness. During the school week, these students engage in a gym class only once a week. In addition, 95% of the students receive free or reduced lunch. Also, many students arrived at our school from all over the world such as Iraq, Mexico, Liberia, Somalia, Puerto Rico, Cambodia, India, and Yemen.
