We immediately put them to use by reorganizing our classroom library and literacy centers so students can independently choose books and return them to clearly labeled bins. One special moment happened during our first \"shop for books\" time—students carefully browsed the shelves, selecting texts that interested them and proudly placing them back in their proper spots when finished. The new shelving has helped create a calm, inviting space where children feel ownership over their learning environment.\r\n\r\nWhen the shelves first arrived, the students were full of excitement and curiosity. They watched as we unpacked and set them up, asking where their favorite books would go and helping sort bins by topic. Once everything was arranged at their eye level, several students immediately began exploring, saying things like, \"Now I can reach it by myself!\" The sense of independence was noticeable right away. Even students who typically wait for help are now confidently accessing materials without needing adult assistance.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, these shelves are helping us build stronger routines and responsibility within our classroom community. We are practicing caring for materials, organizing by category, and returning items to their labeled spaces as part of our daily clean-up and literacy rotations. As we begin new projects—such as research on animals and creating simple class books—students will independently gather and return the resources they need. Thanks to your support, our classroom is not only more organized but also more empowering for our young learners as they grow in independence and responsibility.","fullyFundedDate":1694030883410,"projectUrl":"project/shelves-for-materials/7800200/","projectTitle":"Shelves for Materials","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Jessica Ford","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7378050_orig.png?crop=1125,1125,x0,y322&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1627000721998","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7378050"},{"teacherId":7378050,"projectId":7043403,"letterContent":"Because of your generosity, our kindergarten classroom library has become a place of excitement, discovery, and growing confidence. These new books are helping our youngest learners build the very foundation of reading.\r\n\r\nWhile many of our donors love reading, teaching reading in kindergarten starts with the building blocks. With these new texts, students are practicing letter recognition, identifying beginning and ending sounds, rhyming, and blending simple words. They are learning how print works — tracking words from left to right, understanding that spaces separate words, and recognizing sight words in context. We also use the books to practice retelling stories, identifying characters and settings, and making simple predictions using pictures and clues from the text.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is active and joyful. During whole-group lessons, we gather on the carpet to read big books together, noticing patterns and repeating phrases. In small groups, students practice decoding simple texts and building confidence with early readers. During independent reading time, you might see children \"reading the pictures,\" pointing to words as they read, whisper-reading to themselves, or sharing a favorite book with a partner. We celebrate effort and growth, and even our earliest readers feel proud to say, \"I can read this!\"\r\n\r\nSome of our students who were initially unsure about books are now eagerly choosing them during free choice time. High-interest topics — like animals, community helpers, and friendship stories — have especially captured their attention. A few students who are still developing language skills are thriving with books that have strong picture support and repetitive text. It has been beautiful to watch children build stamina, confidence, and excitement as readers.\r\n\r\nYour support is doing more than adding books to shelves — it is helping five- and six-year-olds see themselves as readers. That gift will stay with them for years to come. While most people see these devices as fancy screens, my students see them as a way to turn \"what if\" into \"look at this!\" The most exciting part for them is the sheer speed of it all; they can test an idea, watch it fail, and fix it before I even finish my morning coffee. I have especially loved watching my quietest students, the ones who usually hide in the back, suddenly turn into digital wizards who lead the rest of the class.
