Your support has brought several vertical rolling whiteboards and a full set of supplies into our classroom, and the impact was immediate.\r\nBefore these boards arrived, much of our work happened at desks, which can sometimes feel static. Now, our room has transformed into a dynamic \"thinking classroom.\" These vertical surfaces have completely changed how my students engage with their lessons:\r\nRisk-Taking: Because the boards are non-permanent, students are no longer afraid to make mistakes. They dive into tough problems knowing they can easily erase and try again, which has built immense confidence.\r\nActive Collaboration: The rolling boards allow us to create flexible group spaces anywhere in the room. I now see students standing together, debating ideas, and teaching one another in ways that weren't possible before.\r\nVisible Thinking: For me as a teacher, these boards are a game-changer. I can see the \"workings\" of every group at a single glance, allowing me to step in with the right feedback at exactly the right moment.\r\nIt is rare to see a single resource spark so much energy and movement in a learning space. Through this process, students didn't just learn about local species—they developed a deeper sense of connection and responsibility toward the environment around them. Researching native animals, understanding their habitats, and translating that knowledge into visual art required students to think critically and creatively. The hands-on nature of mosaic work also strengthened perseverance, problem-solving, and collaboration, as students worked through challenges in design, material use, and construction. For many, this was an opportunity to see their ideas take physical shape in a lasting way, which built confidence and a sense of pride in their work.\r\nBeyond the classroom, the mosaics serve as a visible and lasting contribution to the community. Installed in shared public spaces, they help educate viewers about native species that are often overlooked, fostering greater awareness of local ecosystems and conservation efforts. Community members, families, and visitors are able to engage with the artwork, sparking conversations about the importance of protecting these animals and their habitats. In this way, the project extends its reach far beyond the students who created it, turning their work into a form of public storytelling and environmental advocacy. The mosaics also help beautify spaces that may have previously felt plain or neglected, contributing to a stronger sense of place and pride within the community.\r\nThe long-term impact of this project lies in both the personal growth of the students and the enduring message their work communicates. Students leave the experience with a stronger understanding of how art can be used as a tool for education and change, and with a heightened awareness of their role as stewards of the environment. The project reinforces the idea that young people can make meaningful contributions to their communities, even at an early age. At the same time, the mosaics continue to function as educational landmarks—reminding all who encounter them of the unique wildlife that surrounds them and the shared responsibility to protect it.","fullyFundedDate":1771646762631,"projectUrl":"project/making-mosaics-for-the-community/10107041/","projectTitle":"Making Mosaics for the Community","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Carpenter","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp5549054_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1533698686376","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/courtney-waikiki"},{"teacherId":5920387,"projectId":10108121,"letterContent":"A huge mahalo to our donors for so generously providing us funding to purchase a collaborative work station.
