The addition of the microscope allowed us to make an amazing discovery. The area of our pūnāwai (freshwater spring) that we thought was polluted is actually... where ground water is coming out! It is carrying iron from the bedrock up naturally, and it is a completely healthy ecosystem! We were so amazed to discover this and see the filamentous algae and some microbes moving around using the microscope. Parents were also very impressed with our findings at our most recent Lā ʻOhana. With this amazing tool we will continue to monitor the water quality at our ʻāina site and see what conclusions we can come to. In addition to viewing the water samples on the microscope, weʻve also been testing PH, Turbidity, Nitrates, Phosphates, Dissolved Oxygen, and Temperature, and weʻve already learned a lot just in a few weeks with this equipment. Your generosity has had a profound impact on our students and their understanding of both science and culture. While some of our resources, like the rockets and solar binoculars, didn't work quite as expected, we made the most of what we had, and the results were truly amazing. The telescope, in particular, became a central tool for exploring our environment. Students used it to observe birds on campus and during field trips, but the highlight was our study of the moon. The first time the students looked through the telescope, one exclaimed, \"The moon looks so close!\" This moment sparked fascinating discussions about our connection to the moon, especially in Hawaiian culture.\r\n\r\nWe were able to integrate Hawaiian lunar traditions into our studies as we explored how the moon's phases influence planting. For instance, we learned that the 'Ole moon, a half moon phase, is a time when we don't plant. Conversely, the La'au moons are great for planting medicinal plants, while the Loa moons are perfect for growing long plants like vines or bamboo. This hands-on connection to Hawaiian traditions deepened students' understanding of place and how our natural environment influences our lives. Seeing the moon through the telescope allowed us to tie this knowledge directly to what we were learning in the classroom, creating a meaningful, cultural context that resonated with the students.\r\n\r\nNext, we will continue exploring the moon's phases and how they impact our daily lives and future growth, both literally and figuratively. We look forward to using the telescope to chart the changing phases of the moon, and our students are eager to keep observing and expanding their knowledge of the world around them. Your support has not only provided us with the tools we need to observe the stars and the moon, but it's also helped foster a deeper appreciation of our Hawaiian culture, environment, and natural rhythms.\r\n\r\nMahalo again for your support!","fullyFundedDate":1734622625459,"projectUrl":"project/accessing-space-in-our-hands-on-classroo/9009190/","projectTitle":"Accessing Space in our Hands-on Classroom","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Kolo","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-5_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9875588"},{"teacherId":10191365,"projectId":9627209,"letterContent":"Mahalo, again for your generous donations. This sense of order reduced stress and distractions, allowing us to maximize instructional time and maintain a calm, welcoming atmosphere for everyone.\r\n\r\nEqually transformative were the sensory tools and objects that were donated. Items like fidget tools, sensory cushions, calming jars, and tactile materials supported students' emotional regulation and concentration throughout the day. To recap our class project, \"Stamping Aloha: Exploring Hawaiian Art Through Print\", students experienced Hawaiian through plant material stamping. The students were all given a kīhei (traditional Hawaiian garment/shawl) using the muslin material that was dyed with ʻōlena (turmeric). The students then used the paints, painting tools, and Hawaiian plants to create a stamped design on their kīhei that represents who they are and their connection to Hawaiʻi and the Hawaiian culture.\r\n The students were ecstatic to be able to use new tools and materials to create something of their own that represents who they are. My students are very creative and love any type of art, especially those with paint. For most of them, it was the first time that they had dyed material, and it was interesting for them to see the way that the dye changed the color of the muslin material. ʻŌlena is a very fragrant plant, and while the kīhei were soaking in the dye, they were saying how good the dye smelt. One of my students mentioned that now anytime they smell ʻōlena, they will be reminded of this day were they got to make their kīhei. With these kīhei that they were able to make with your generous donation, the students will be showcasing their stamped kīhei to their parents at the end of the school year, in our end of year hōʻike (project presentations).
