We were not able to make enough lei for all 100 students, but the students did their best with the time they had. Time and patience is necessary for this project. A total of 18 LEGO lei was created for the 8th grade students. \r\n\r\nThe LEGO lei project had a meaningful impact on some of our eighth-grade students by helping them feel recognized, valued, and celebrated as they reached an important milestone in their educational journey. Many of our students have worked hard to overcome academic, social, and personal challenges throughout middle school, and receiving a LEGO lei provided a fun and memorable way to honor their accomplishments.\r\n\r\nThe lei added excitement and school pride to our promotion ceremony while giving students a keepsake they could cherish long after the event. Because the leis were built from LEGO pieces, they reflected creativity, perseverance, and problem-solving—qualities our students have developed during their time in middle school.\r\n\r\nFor many students and families, the LEGO lei became a symbol of achievement and community support. The celebration helped create positive memories, strengthened students' sense of belonging, and encouraged them to move forward to high school with confidence. Thanks to the generosity of donors, our students felt seen, celebrated, and appreciated during this special transition. When students begin to feel tired or lose focus, having access to a quick, nutritious snack helps them re-engage and sustain their attention. I've noticed a clear difference during independent work time—students are more alert, productive, and willing to persist through challenges. At the same time, the anti-stress fidgets have become an essential tool for self-regulation. Students use them quietly during lessons, discussions, and even assessments to manage stress and stay present.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, my students were genuinely excited and grateful. Many immediately asked how and when they could use them, which opened a meaningful conversation about taking care of their bodies and minds so they can learn at their best. For some students, especially those who struggle with anxiety or focus, the fidgets were an instant source of comfort and support.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we are continuing to build routines that normalize both academic focus and social-emotional awareness. As we move into more collaborative projects and problem-based learning, these resources will play a key role in helping students regulate themselves, stay engaged, and work effectively with peers. Several of my students already love basketball, so connecting math concepts to real NBA and WNBA stats immediately increased engagement and motivation. Instead of simply solving problems on paper, students saw how fractions, percentages, averages, and probability were used in real-life sports situations they cared about.\r\n\r\nThe addition of basketballs and shooting spots made the learning even more meaningful by giving students the opportunity to physically apply the math concepts they learned. Students calculated their own shooting percentages, compared data, analyzed performance, and made predictions based on real results. This hands-on experience strengthened understanding and helped students retain skills because they were actively participating in the learning process.\r\n\r\nBeyond math, this project helped build teamwork, communication, confidence, and problem-solving skills. Students who did not normally feel successful in math had new opportunities to shine through physical activity and sports-based learning. By creating positive connections between academics and students' personal interests, this project helped build both academic confidence and a stronger love of learning.
