Seventh grade math students begin to calculate with integers, follow more in depth order of operations, and learn about powers and roots. Hawaii Island students need greater exposure to the math that is all around them. Math Practice 5 (I can use math tools and tell why I used them) and Math Practice 8 (I can solve problems by looking for rules and patterns) in particular will be more readily addressed when calculators are available to experiment with and to verify mathematical properties. A classroom set will help to ensure that on one is left out.
