They were eager to stand up, grab markers, and begin working. Even students who are usually hesitant to participate became more involved because the environment feels active and low-pressure. Writing vertically encourages teamwork and accountability, and students naturally talk through their thinking instead of working in isolation. Students learned fluency games such as \"Stitch's Sums & Differences\", where they rolled a pair of dice with a partner to find the sum or difference of the two numbers. They also played \"Place Value War\" using the cards to create the largest multi-digit numbers. What's great about this game is that it can also be played with decimals. \r\nLearning through games receive more cheers than jeers from students, and the best part is that the students don't realize they are learning. They prefer games using the dice over the cards. It must be something about the physical rolling of the dice that makes it feel more like a game. \r\nOnce a game is introduced whole and the students know how to play it, this game is offered as a choice for students to revisit during centers.
