The light table has quickly become one of the most engaging centers in our classroom, encouraging hands-on STEM exploration, creativity, conversations, and collaboration. One especially meaningful moment occurred when three of my preschoolers worked together to design and build a bridge using the crystal building blocks and then labeled their construction. Watching them problem-solve, communicate, and connect literacy with engineering concepts showed just how impactful these materials have been in supporting meaningful, play-based learning.\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the new materials, their excitement was immediate and contagious. Their eyes lit up as they explored how the colorful blocks and letters glowed on the light table, and many students could not wait to touch, sort, stack, and create. The materials instantly inspired curiosity, teamwork, and imaginative thinking. Since introducing these resources, students have become more engaged in exploring shapes, colors, letters, counting, and building concepts in new ways. Our next steps include expanding these activities into a classroom-wide \"community builders\" project, where students will work together to construct different structures such as roads, homes, and bridges while labeling their creations with letters and numbers. Through these experiences, my students are continuing to strengthen their early literacy, math, STEM, and social-emotional skills in an exciting and interactive environment. I began by giving students two minutes to peruse the novels: Anne of Green gables, Wild River, From the Desk of Zoe Washington, and My Side of the Mountain. Students chose which novel they wanted to begin reading first.\r\n I announced a hands-on project that would accompany each novel. One requirement was that students must complete two novels before I would begin the projects. Several students are now reading their third novel in a very short time.\r\n Students began each school day with fifteen minutes of silent reading. As they were reading, I quietly passed out a sticky note (a different color for each novel) to each student. As students read, they were encouraged to write down one \"Golden Line\"; a line from the story that made an impact, or stood out to them from the reading. This activity reinforced the learning activity of quoting and citing sources. At the end of the silent reading time, students enjoyed sharing their \"golden lines\" which helped to get others excited to read the novel.\r\n Students painted watercolor bookmarks to represent the \"kindred spirits\" from Anne of Green Gables, constructed handmade paper to represent the stationary used by Zoe Washington, and created a diorama of the flood scene from Wild River. \r\n Throughout this experience, students participated in rich discussions about the motivations of characters and their conflicts, learned robust vocabulary, author's perspective, and theme. This has been a truly wonderful experience. Thank you for enriching our school experience.","fullyFundedDate":1771002120210,"projectUrl":"project/unlocking-imagination-novels-to-ignite/9928498/","projectTitle":"Unlocking Imagination: Novels to Ignite a Passion for Reading!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Doherty","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10362530"},{"teacherId":4815782,"projectId":10110932,"letterContent":"Mahalo for your donations and purchasing of new PE equipment for my school that I work at.
