One of the biggest changes has been the lighting in our room. My students immediately noticed the floor lamps and color-changing lights the moment they walked in. They were excited, curious, and kept commenting on how calm and different the classroom felt. I now use different lighting during different parts of class — brighter lighting during instruction and softer lighting during independent work or quiet activities. It has helped create a more welcoming atmosphere where students feel comfortable, focused, and excited to learn. For many of my students in our military-connected community, having a classroom that feels safe, predictable, and positive matters more than people sometimes realize.\r\n\r\nThe prize corner resources have also continued strengthening our classroom ticket system in a really meaningful way. Students earn tickets for positive behavior, participation, kindness, effort, responsibility, and academic growth. Every Friday, we hold our classroom prize drawing, and the chips and drinks have become highly motivating rewards that students genuinely get excited about. What I appreciate most is that the system encourages students to celebrate each other's successes. I've watched students cheer for classmates when their names are called and encourage one another to make positive choices throughout the week. The rewards are helping reinforce a classroom culture built around effort, respect, and community.\r\n\r\nThe vacuum has also made a bigger difference than I expected. I work hard to keep our classroom clean and welcoming every day, and being able to quickly clean the room after long school days, projects, snacks, and activities helps maintain an environment students can feel proud of. Moving forward, we will continue using these resources daily as we finish out the school year with collaborative activities, review games, and end-of-year projects designed to keep students engaged and connected. These donations helped create a classroom environment that feels brighter, more motivating, and more supportive for my students every single day.","fullyFundedDate":1771692064688,"projectUrl":"project/lighting-the-way-rewarding-the-right-c/10108338/","projectTitle":"Lighting the Way & Rewarding the Right Choices","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Attar","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10277619"},{"teacherId":9968127,"projectId":10103391,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous donation of board games and card games for our school. Several teachers have used our board game boxes during additional unplugged advisory Sense of Belonging Opportunties. \r\n\r\nWe had planned a boardgame event with our families. Parents were looking forward to enjoy an afternoon meeting other families. Sadly our event was postponed due to severe weather and school cancelation. \r\n\r\nI wish you could hear the laughter from the students. The variety of card games and Battleship and Scrabble allowed students to select a game they were comfortable with or interested in. The magnet tape has made it easy to display things like class assessment data which informs discussion and reflection after each completed unit. One of the most impactful changes has been how we begin and end each day. Students take responsibility for wiping down desks, sweeping the floors, and organizing shared spaces. This simple routine has turned into a powerful classroom moment—students are learning ownership, respect for their environment, and teamwork. The act of cleaning helps us mentally transition into learning mode in the morning and signals closure and reflection before we leave for the day. It has also made a noticeable difference in supporting our janitorial staff, which students now openly acknowledge and appreciate.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the materials, they were genuinely excited. They felt proud to have real tools entrusted to them and eager to help. Many students immediately asked when they could start using the supplies and took the initiative to remind one another of cleaning responsibilities. The classroom feels calmer, more welcoming, and more focused as a result. The clean, organized space has helped students feel prepared for the day and more motivated to engage in lessons.\r\n\r\nThanks to your generosity, the next steps for students involve building on this sense of responsibility while continuing our current lessons. Students are connecting classroom care to broader conversations about community, responsibility, and respect—both inside and outside of school. We are also expanding student roles so everyone has a chance to contribute to maintaining our learning space. Because of you, our classroom is better equipped and also provides a more comfortable environment for students, where they feel more supported and can be engaged and learn every day. \r\n\r\nI teach both seventh-grade ELA and Social Studies, which means that our days are filled with a lot of reading, writing, discussions, critical thinking, collaboration, and testing. As you know, Middle School can be a challenging time for students, both academically and emotionally, and the items you donated have made a real difference in helping them be successful in class. Both the desk dividers and headphones have made a noticeable difference in our class and have allowed students to test more privately, which has reduced anxiety and distractions, and this has truly helped them show me what they know. The headphones have also allowed students to have access to audiobooks, online assessments that can be read to them, and instructional videos, for those who don't have their own. I also want to send a big thank you for the books donated to our classroom library, because the books chosen came directly from students' wish lists and have been invaluable as we implemented \"First Chapter Fridays\" and allowed for the checking out of even more books than our school library has available. \r\n\r\nLastly, the snacks that were provided, which might seem simple, have made a huge impact in the classroom. Imagine how many students come to school, having just rolled out of bed, and did not eat breakfast, or come to me at lunch with nothing to eat! They know they can count on me to provide Pop-tarts, popcorn, and more, to get or keep them going for the day, and they have proven to be a huge brain power booster during longer testing days. \r\n\r\nBecause of donors like you, our classroom feels more inclusive, more engaging, and more supportive, so on behalf of my seventh graders and myself, thank you for making such a positive impact.","fullyFundedDate":1759242245242,"projectUrl":"project/a-few-necessities/9772806/","projectTitle":"A Few Necessities","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Brewer","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10109090_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1754753450929","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10109090"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_50919","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":729,"numTeachers":55,"percentFrplEligible":38,"percentAsian":5,"percentBlack":15,"percentWhite":33,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":25,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":5,"percentMultiracialImputed":13,"gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"13.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":23.2,"schoolId":50919,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Major Sheldon Wheeler Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Major Sheldon Wheeler Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/hawaii/central-oahu-school-district/maj-sheldon-wheeler-middle-school/50919"}
