These tools help keep my students engaged, and for some magical reason, helps keep them from being distracted from other stimuli. These tactile objects (slinky toys, rubbery fidget objects, squish balls) help the students focus on the main activity while simultaneously giving the hands something to do. The glitter jars often give students a visual activity to help the mind focus on the actual learning- instead of having students do other things such as breaking pencils, playing with erasers, and just being distracted. The students were excited to use the fresh, new items and were thankful to use the items for extra movement or touch. The sensory objects even helped to regulate those students who need time to calm down or take a break from being upset or frustrated. Some students get overly frustrated when faced with tasks, so putting these objects in our \"Calming Corner\" helped them to refocus, calm down, and reduce stress. \r\n Students enjoy using the wedge seating/furniture. Teams of students take turns utilizing the seating during the week. They get very creative using the furniture. They take their laptops to the area, and even use the seating as work spaces. Students utilize their organizers for their headphones and writing utensils. \r\n Sensory regulation is necessary to achieve emotional and greater well being. It made my teacher heart happy to see them excitedly create, persevere, work together, and have a final project to take home. We also used the supplies while learning about the sun and creating gingerbread man traps.\r\nMy students were very excited to be able to build with these new materials. Some of them haven't had the chance to build projects on their own with these materials. \r\nI look forward to planning more STEM projects for them in the second semester giving them a chance to use the same materials and others we haven't touched yet. When we started our fractions unit, the concepts were abstract and intimidating. Now, thanks to the fraction math manipulatives, those challenging mixed numbers and complex operations are no longer just symbols on a page. Our students can physically model problems, holding a piece of $1/4$ next to a piece of $1/2$ and seeing, instantly, how they combine. This hands-on approach has dramatically lowered frustration and raised engagement—and test scores!\r\n\r\nThe creative materials have been just as essential. The vibrant Cray-Pas oil pastels allow students to explore texture and color in ways traditional crayons never could, turning simple history illustrations into rich, expressive pieces of art. Meanwhile, the discipline of origami paper provides a calming, focused activity after high-energy lessons, helping us develop fine motor skills and spatial reasoning while encouraging quiet concentration.\r\n\r\nFinally, the \"Active Bodies\" part of our title truly came alive during recess. Before, our playground had limited equipment, often leading to students standing around. Now, the new soccer balls and toss and catch ball sets ensure that every student has an opportunity to participate in healthy, cooperative play. I've seen newfound teamwork and improved social skills as they negotiate games and share equipment.\r\n\r\nThank you for seeing the value in educating the whole child—the active body, the full heart, and the hands-on mind. I'm excited to share how these resources have been put to use, especially during our recent unit on the Middle Ages in reading class.\r\n\r\nThe chart paper for guided notes and large timelines has been a game-changer for visual learning. Instead of students keeping all their notes tucked away in a binder, we now create giant, collaborative visual notes on the chart paper. One example is our guided note-taking, mapping out the social hierarchy (kings, nobles, knights, peasants) and key concepts like feudalism and the role of the Church. This collective effort ensures everyone understands the big picture and provides a continuous, colorful reference point that we can literally stand up and look at together.\r\n\r\nThe floor cushions have breathed new life into our collaborative work. Group activities are no longer confined to desks; students eagerly grab a cushion and cluster in a cozy corner for their research teams. The relaxed, comfortable atmosphere seems to lower their stress and encourage more open, thoughtful dialogue.\r\n\r\nThe students' reaction when the materials first arrived was priceless—a mixture of surprise and genuine excitement. When they saw the colorful bins for our classroom library, the immediate reaction was to organize everything with purpose and pride. The floor cushions were the biggest hit; they were instantly claimed for silent reading time. The shift in energy was palpable; the classroom instantly felt more vibrant and student-owned.","fullyFundedDate":1741694214911,"projectUrl":"project/creative-flow/9153774/","projectTitle":"Creative Flow","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Lilley","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp5108591_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1516765552947","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5108591"},{"teacherId":8394372,"projectId":8221827,"letterContent":"Our Kindergarten Keiki have been so appreciative of all their recess equipment and toys for those who don't want to actively play at recess.
