Your contributions have truly made a meaningful difference for my students. When the new books and materials arrived, my students were genuinely excited. I had one student create a book club without our team. The students were so surprised by all the titles because they were genuine books they were wanting to read but did not have access to them. This was exactly the spark we needed to fuel deeper engagement with literature.\r\n\r\nThis year, part of the curriculum, I wanted to implement literature circles again. Thanks to your generosity I was able to because there were many books the students could now choose from. Students formed small groups based on their reading interests and have been diving into rich discussions around character development, theme, and author's craft. One memorable moment was when a normally quiet, shy, student led her group's conversation with thoughtful insights that impressed everyone. These materials have helped foster not just reading comprehension, but confidence and a love of reading that will carry beyond the classroom.\r\n\r\nThey were able to make connections between the characters' journeys and their own lives which is the most powerful reminder of literature's impact. \r\n\r\nThank you again for giving my students the tools and inspiration to grow as readers, writers, and thinkers in our world.","fullyFundedDate":1724499643051,"projectUrl":"project/help-give-my-students-an-even-playing-fi/8522222/","projectTitle":"Help Give My Students an Even Playing Field","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Livingston","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7924297_orig.jpg?crop=1170,1170,x0,y113&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1653865409217","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7924297"},{"teacherId":5990841,"projectId":9207125,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for enriching our study of the Civil Rights Movement. Students were excited to come to class each day to continue our book study. We started the unit by looking into the setting of the first part of the book- Obama's inauguration in January 2009. John Lewis was the only man to have given a speech at both the March on Washington in 1964 and be able to stand by Obama on Inauguration Day in 2009. We dissected and analyzed Obama's speech to point out references to the Civil Right Movement of the 60s and look at the hope he had for the future. Then, we dove into graphic novels and the similarities and differences in how we read them. We look into the elements of graphic novels and even how to read them. Once we were comfortable with the parts of graphic novels, we finally moved onto reading it. As this topic tends to be hard for some students to really understand, I chose to read aloud to the students. This allowed me to be able to capture the emotion behind the story. While reading, we stopped at certain points to study topics that were covered. We stopped for a mini lesson on sharecropping, Emmet Till, and Mahatma Gandhi. At the end of Book One, we were able to complete a Character List worksheet explaining how each character played a pivotal role in Lewis' life. We then found textual evidence for different traits that John Lewis embodies.\r\nThis unit of study allowed my students the opportunity to learn to love reading, dig deep into their ways of thinking about equality and fairness, and help with their analysis skills using a text they actually enjoyed. I cannot wait to build upon this unit for next year!","fullyFundedDate":1742959498610,"projectUrl":"project/march-with-john-lewis/9207125/","projectTitle":"March With John Lewis","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Bischoff","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp5990841_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1548428490011","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/anne-bischoff"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_53469","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1974,"numTeachers":125,"percentFrplEligible":85,"percentAsian":7,"percentBlack":28,"percentWhite":5,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":56,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"15.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":54.8,"schoolId":53469,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about J.E.
