These books will be used year after year to help students connect what we learned about in class to a story about children their age. The students will come closer to truly feeling what life was like in the South during the 1960s and can put themselves in the main characters shoes. Students will read independently, in small groups, and as a whole class in order to practice different literacy skills. They will do assignments all along in order to draw text to self and text to world connections. Without a book for every child in the classroom, it will be difficult to allow students to go at their own pace. I cannot wait to show my kids that reading (even fiction) is not only for the Language Arts classroom. I hope to also be able to show my kids a love for reading that I acquired in my middle school years.
