Working with English Language Learners, it is important to focus on literacy skills in all content areas. While I want my students to learn these literacy skills, I also want them to feel seen. Hidden Figures features African American women, two groups which are underrepresented in the field of science. My students will not only read about material we are studying, but will also read a story in which they are represented. We will read this book together in class, practicing our reading and comprehension skills. I am excited for students to read outside of their language arts class. My hope is that students will find a genre of reading they enjoy.
