Whether they are working independently, collaborating with classmates, or tackling a challenging math problem, having different seating choices helps make our classroom feel like a space that truly belongs to them.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite things has been seeing how excited students are to come into the classroom and choose their spot for the day. They have learned to make responsible choices about where they work best, and I have noticed how much more comfortable and engaged many of them are during lessons and independent work.\r\n\r\nAs a sixth-grade math teacher, I want my classroom to be a place where students feel safe taking risks, asking questions, making mistakes, and challenging themselves. For students in our two self-contained classrooms, learning is most meaningful when it is hands-on, purposeful, and connected to real-life experiences. This new oven has allowed us to turn baking into so much more than a classroom activity—it has become an opportunity for our students to learn, work together, communicate, and contribute to our school community.\r\n\r\nWe use the oven during our bi-weekly cookie fundraiser, where our students prepare and bake cookies to sell during school lunches. Our students participate in each step of the process, including gathering ingredients, following a recipe, measuring, mixing, scooping dough, placing cookies on trays, cleaning up, and packaging the finished product. These activities provide natural opportunities to practice math skills, sequencing, fine-motor skills, communication, following directions, patience, and vocational skills.\r\n\r\nOne of our favorite moments was watching our students proudly check on their first batch of cookies. There was so much excitement when they realized that the ingredients they had measured and mixed were becoming something they could actually share with others! Students were eager to participate and were especially proud when they saw other students and staff enjoying the cookies they had helped make. For many of our students, being able to create something that has a real purpose and is valued by others is incredibly meaningful.\r\n\r\nWhen the oven first arrived, our students were immediately curious and excited. Some wanted to look inside, while others were eager to begin baking right away. We talked about how the oven would help us become more independent and allow us to continue our cookie fundraiser. Seeing their excitement reminded us that even something as simple as an oven can open the door to meaningful learning experiences.\r\n\r\nOur next steps are to continue building our students' independence throughout the baking process. We are working toward having students take on specific jobs and responsibilities, such as reading or identifying ingredients, measuring, preparing the dough, setting timers, checking finished cookies with adult support, packaging orders, and helping with cleanup. We will also continue incorporating math, communication, and life-skills instruction into each baking experience.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, we want our students to understand that they have something valuable to contribute to their school community. Every batch of cookies gives them another opportunity to practice skills, make choices, work as a team, and experience the pride that comes from creating something themselves.\r\n\r\nThank you for helping make these experiences possible.
